Because I have long loved cats (despite growing up with a cranky one!), I decided to carve my own artistic niche, incorporating my beloved kitties into various forms, including paintings, drawings, jewelry pieces, and illustrated poetry.
My current media of choice are watercolor, for its lighter touch, independence, and fluidity, and colored pencil and pen-and-ink, because of their controllability and ease of use in keeping up with incoming ideas.
And the ideas can come quickly! I can “find” cats everywhere. A stray mark on a paper, for example, can suggest the turn of a cat’s ear, and from there I will add the rest of the cat. Tootsie and Rocky offer themselves as models (but I must be fast!)
By giving many of my felines both the natural qualities of the cat and the personality traits of humans (e.g., by providing opposable thumbs and pliable facial muscles), my felines come to life with their own special sparkle and whimsy to (I hope) engage and lift the spirits of those who encounter them.
A Shenandoah Valley native, I live in Winchester, VA, carefully saving the seeds from my garden to tes unique works of paper craft art. I also have a line of note cards called Note-able Cats.
